What Berkeley expects

  • Media Studies B.A.

    Courses to finish

Prerequisites are one post-Civil War American history course such as History 7B, Political Science 1, one intro social science or humanities course such as Econ 1, Psych 1 or Sociology 1, and Media Studies 10, each for a letter grade with C or better. Source

Media Studies 10 must be taken at UC Berkeley, and community college equivalents are no longer accepted since Fall 2020. Other prerequisites can be completed at community colleges per ASSIST. Source

    Selection

Declaration requires C or better in each of the four prerequisites and a 2.0 GPA across prerequisites and major courses. Source

    Also note

UC Berkeley has no Communication major. Media Studies is the closest.

From Fall 2026 onward, new transfers who intended Media Studies on the UC application are automatically declared. Starting Spring 2027, MS 10 is required before core courses. Source

Starting Fall 2027, transfers offered admission to Letters and Science are admitted directly into the major selected on the UC application, with no separate declaration process. Source

Letters and Science requires the UC 7-course pattern and a minimum 3.0 UC-transferable GPA by the end of the fall term of application. IGETC, Cal-GETC and Essential Skills are not required for admission. Source

    Every Berkeley major

Every Berkeley college requires at least 60 semester (90 quarter) UC-transferable units by the end of the spring term before fall enrollment, and major preparation is listed on ASSIST and in the Berkeley Catalog. Source
