UC personal insight questions for transfers
Transfer applicants answer four questions, 350 words each. One is required for everyone, and you pick the other three from seven.
Checked against official UC and campus sources in October 2026.
Overview
The required question
“Please describe how you have prepared for your intended major, including your readiness to succeed in your upper-division courses once you enroll at the university.”
The seven to choose from
- Leadership
- Creativity
- Your greatest talent or skill
- An educational opportunity or barrier
- A significant challenge
- Your school or community
- What makes you a strong candidate beyond your application
What reviewers look for
- UCLA weighs all four answers equally.
- Work, family responsibilities and caregiving count as activities in UC review, whatever your major.
- The additional comments box is for context such as a withdrawal or a hard semester. It isn’t a fifth essay.
Use the essay picker on the LetterReady home page to match your experience to the three best-fit questions.
