The UC 7-course pattern
Every UC campus requires the 7-course pattern for junior-level transfer. Missing one course makes you ineligible, whatever your GPA.
Checked against official UC and campus sources in October 2026.
Overview
| Courses | What counts | Code on ASSIST |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | English composition | UC-E |
| 1 | Mathematical concepts or quantitative reasoning | UC-M |
| 4 | From at least two of arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and physical and biological sciences | UC-H, UC-B, UC-S |
The rules around it
- Every course needs a C or better, or a Pass that equals a C.
- All seven must be done by the end of the spring before you transfer.
- A TAG needs one English composition and one math course done by fall, and the rest by spring.
- AP English Language and AP English Literature together count as one English composition course, not two.
- Completing IGETC or Cal-GETC may already satisfy the pattern.
