The CSU ADT guarantee, explained
An Associate Degree for Transfer is the strongest single advantage a community college student has at the CSU. Here is what it does and doesn’t promise.
Checked against official CSU and campus sources in October 2026.
What an ADT guarantees
- Students with an Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) who meet CSU minimum eligibility are guaranteed priority admission to a CSU campus. The guarantee does not cover a particular campus or major.
- To receive priority admission, students must choose a CSU degree program that is similar to what they studied at community college. Those admitted to a similar program are guaranteed to finish the bachelor's degree within 60 semester (90 quarter) units if they do not repeat courses or add minors or emphases and stay continuously enrolled in the same major.
- Cal State Long Beach's fall 2027 transfer requirements page for its College of Liberal Arts says ADT recipients have their cumulative GPA increased by 0.1. That calculated GPA is used when ranking applicants.
- CSUN's 2026-27 catalog says ADT holders get priority admission consideration over other transfer applicants at a local CSU or in a non-impacted program. In impacted programs they receive limited priority consideration based on their eligibility ranking.
- ADT holders who meet upper-division eligibility but are not admitted to their chosen campus because of lack of space are redirected to an alternate campus.
- Cal State Long Beach says the ADT must be granted no later than the prior spring term to qualify for fall admission.
The Transfer Success Pathway
The Transfer Success Pathway is a CSU dual admission program for students entering a California community college who have not earned college credit since high school or a GED. Eligible students sign an agreement in the CSU Transfer Planner during the August 1 to October 31 agreement cycle in the fall they start community college. Students who meet every requirement within three years are guaranteed admission to the CSU campus and degree program in their agreement, though available programs vary by campus.

How each campus treats an ADT
| Campus | ADT |
|---|---|
| Cal Poly Pomona | A similar ADT counts as a 0.1 GPA bump for impacted majors and 0.2 for non-impacted majors in CPP's multifactor model. For impacted majors the ADT curriculum replaces the supplemental course requirements. An ADT does not guarantee admission. |
| Cal Poly SLO | Cal Poly lists ADT pathways starting fall 2026, including Chemistry, History, Journalism, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology and Theatre Arts. Pathways added for fall 2027 and beyond include Anthropology, Communication Studies 2.0, English, Physics, Psychology and Spanish. The page cites STAR Act priority admission to a similar program but gives no GPA bonus. |
| Cal State Fullerton | CSUF's transfer admission page (last published October 21, 2026) says Fall 2027 applicants must complete all admission requirements, including the ADT if applicable, by Spring 2027. |
| Cal State LA | Cal State LA gives priority admission consideration to ADT applicants. Non-local ADT students get a +0.1 GPA bonus in ranking for majors with major-specific criteria. For fall admission the community college must certify the ADT will be finished by the end of the preceding spring term. |
| Cal State San Marcos | CSUSM's ADT page (updated August 12, 2026) does not describe an admission priority or GPA boost. It says the ADT gives a clear path to the matching CSUSM major, the community college must verify the ADT by March 15 for fall admission, and an admission may be rescinded if the cumulative GPA drops below 2.0. |
| Chico State | Chico State's online catalog (no year shown) says AA-T and AS-T holders are guaranteed admission with junior standing to a CSU and get priority over other transfers for non-impacted programs. For impacted programs they get limited priority based on eligibility ranking. |
| CSU Bakersfield | The CSU Admission Handbook 2027-2028 states that community college students who earn an AA-T or AS-T and meet CSU minimum requirements are guaranteed admission with junior standing and priority consideration. Once admitted, they only need 60 more prescribed units. A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA applies. |
| CSU Channel Islands | The CSU Admission Handbook 2027-2028 states that community college students who earn an AA-T or AS-T and meet CSU minimum requirements are guaranteed admission with junior standing and priority consideration. Once admitted, they only need 60 more prescribed units. A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA applies. |
| CSU Dominguez Hills | The CSUDH 2025-2026 catalog states that community college students who earn an AA-T or AS-T are guaranteed admission with junior standing to a CSU. They also get priority over other transfer applicants at a local CSU or in a non-impacted program. |
| CSULB | If the ADT is deemed similar to a CSULB major, its curriculum replaces the major-specific requirements and the cumulative GPA is increased by 0.1 for the major minimum and ranking. The ADT must be granted by the spring before fall entry. |
| CSUN | CSUN gives ADT holders priority admission consideration even when a CSUN major is impacted, if the ADT matches a CSUN major. They enter with junior standing and can finish in 60 more units if they do not change majors. The page states no GPA bonus. |
| Sacramento State | Applicants self-report the ADT on their application and must have their community college confirm it by March 15 for fall admission. Sacramento State asks for an updated official transcript once the ADT is awarded. |
| SDSU | For fall 2027, applicants with an AA-T or AS-T in an SDSU-approved similar major get admission priority and may be within 0.1 of the major's required GPA. Many majors do not accept the ADT pathway, and Kinesiology (Exercise Science) and Liberal Studies (Education-Generalist) are open only to ADT applicants. |
| SF State | SF State's impaction page says applicants who complete an ADT in a similar program get an extra 0.10 added to their GPA for competitive admission. |
| SJSU | SJSU says an ADT gives admission priority when the applicant chooses an SJSU major and concentration deemed similar to the ADT, applies for an open term by the deadline and submits documents on time. The page states no GPA bonus. |
| Sonoma State | Sonoma State says students with a completed or in-progress AA-T or AS-T get guaranteed junior standing, priority admission to matching bachelor's programs and need only 60 more units to finish. |
| Stanislaus State | The CSU Admission Handbook 2027-2028 states that community college students who earn an AA-T or AS-T and meet CSU minimum requirements are guaranteed admission with junior standing and priority consideration. Once admitted, they only need 60 more prescribed units. A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA applies. |
