Three tips before you send
- Check the handbook for the deadline - many districts require a written excuse within two or three days of the absence, or it's permanently marked unexcused no matter the reason.
- Send it to the attendance office or front desk, not just the teacher. Attendance records live in the office, and a note that stays in a backpack folder doesn't clear the absence.
- Keep the reason short - 'illness' is enough. Save the doctor's note for when it's required, usually three or more consecutive days out, and keep a copy of everything you send.

How many absences before the school flags my child?
