Immediate Resignation Letter

Sometimes two weeks isn't on the table - a health crisis, a family emergency, or a workplace you can't safely stay in another day. When you have to resign effective immediately, the letter matters more, not less: it fixes your final day of employment in writing, which controls your last paycheck, your benefits end date, and any unemployment questions later. You don't owe anyone an explanation, and this letter doesn't offer one. It states the resignation, acknowledges the short notice once, and offers a remote handover of files and credentials so no one can say you left things in chaos. Fill in the five blanks below and you'll have it done - calm on paper, whatever it took to get here.

[Company name]

Dear [Your manager's name],

Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as [Your job title] at [Company name], effective immediately. My last day of employment is [Date (your last day)].

I recognize that leaving without a notice period creates difficulty for you and the team, and I do not do so lightly. Circumstances require me to step away from my role at once, and I appreciate your understanding.

Although I cannot work a transition period in person, I am willing to help remotely where I reasonably can. I will return all company property promptly, and I am available by email to hand over files, document the status of my open work, and transfer any credentials or account access the team needs. Please let me know where to send company equipment and whom to coordinate with on the handover.

I would also appreciate written confirmation of my final paycheck date and any information regarding benefits continuation.

Thank you for the opportunities during my time at [Company name].

Sincerely,

[Your full name]

Three tips before you send

  1. Send this by email, not just in person - the timestamp fixes your resignation date for your final paycheck, COBRA notice, and any later dispute about whether you quit or were fired.
  2. Photograph or inventory company property before shipping it back, and get a tracking number. Unreturned laptops are the most common excuse for a delayed final paycheck.
  3. Don't put reasons in writing, even good ones. If the situation was hostile or unsafe, document that separately with dates and keep it at home - not in the resignation letter.

Questions people ask

Can I get in trouble for quitting without notice?

Usually not legally. Most US employment is at-will, meaning you can resign at any time just as they can let you go at any time. The real risks are practical: a burned reference, forfeiting an unvested bonus, or breaching a contract if you signed one with a required notice period. Check your offer letter and handbook, then decide.

Will I still get my final paycheck if I quit on the spot?

Yes - you're owed all wages earned through your last day. State law sets the deadline: some states require payment within days of resignation, others allow it on the next regular payday. Employers generally can't withhold your check over short notice or unreturned equipment, though rules vary by state. If it's late, your state labor department handles wage complaints.

Do I have to say why I'm resigning immediately?

No. "Circumstances require me to step away" is enough, and this letter says essentially that. Reasons in writing can only be used to argue with you later. If you're leaving because of harassment, safety issues, or unpaid wages, document those facts separately and consider talking to your state labor agency or an employment lawyer before elaborating anywhere.
